Banksias
Named after a European botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, in 1770, Banksia became a popular flora in Australia.
Banksias are native Australian wildflowers and are generally found in Australian gardens and forests. It has around 170 species and is the
part of the Proteaceae plant family. Due to their production of nectar they are an important source of food for a number of Australian animals, birds and
insects
Appearance
Blossoming over autumn and winter, this unique plant has a strange appearance of its shape. Banksias have a wide range of colours from
yellow to red; its shape of a spiky bottlebrush attracts many attentions.
Adaptation
Their adaptations to the Australian climate are best known by their love of well drained soils in a sunny climate. Banksias have
adapted this climate by limiting access of water. Despite being such a popular Australian plant, several banksias are
listed as rare or threatened.
Map
Banksias are found only to Australia except Papua New Guinea. Few banksias are found in the arid regions of Australia or in the rainforests of the eastern coast.
